Our Sixth "Wine Pairings" Dinner
Sampling the Cuisine and Wines of South Africa
For the 2006-2007 season, Antique Cafe created our very popular wine and dine events. What began as a chance to introduce our customers to a growing wine list has blossomed into a series of evenings that always draw an enthusiastic crowd. We've featured the vintages and recipes of France, Italy, Spain ... even Lebanon.
For our final event of the season, our atlas was open to South Africa, whose sophisticated wine industry and international cuisine made for surprising - and surprisingly pleasant - .pairings.
We began with the refreshing Pearly Bay "Celebration" blanc de blancs. South African macadamia nuts, our version of "biltong" dried meat, and a cocktail of melon macerated in port.
Rock lobter tail salad with frisee, served floating in a Champagne vinaigrette, was accompanied by the award-winning Robertson winery Retreat Sauvignon Blanc.
It takes a flavorful yet uncomplicated wine to stand up to Indian cuisine: Graham Beck "Pinno" Chardonnay was perfect with authentic vegetable samosas, even holding its own with a pair of chutneys!
Pinotage is the signature South African grape, created in 1926 crossing pinot noir and cinsault varieties. Cinsault is known as hermitage in SA, thus the new name "Pinotage". Bon Cap, an organic grower, has produced a delicious wine that paired beautifully with the sweet/savory skewers of lamb, pork and dried apricots.
We closed with vanilla ice cream and a sauce of raisins macerated in our final wine: Pineau de Laborie. Less sweet than many dessert wines, we savored the Pineau as a perfect partner with the Dutch soetkoekies - spice and wine buscuits that have been South African staples for many generations.
